I offer competitive rates for my skill as a therapist, years of experience, and quality of training. There are other therapists in our area who advertise lower rates than I do and this is most often because they have not been in practice as long or do not offer specialized treatment modalities. Think of hair stylists at salons: you pay more for "master stylists" to do a good job on your hair. Why would you not pay a "master clinician" a competitve rate for extra training and experience when your emotional health, your sanity, your relationship, or your recovery is on the line?
Beacuse couseling addresses such critical areas of your life, it is very important to interview several therapists to get a feel for them on the phone and choose a clinician you "click" with. I welcome you to call me for a complimentary 10-minute phone call to do just that. Please read below for more information about insurance, out-of-network insurance benefits, payment options, and my cancellation policy.
I am an "in-network provider" for Cigna.
Currently, my status with United Healthcare is listed as "unavailable" to accept new clients with insurance through United Healthcare, including OPTUM, and it's affiliated companies. I will remain on "unavailable" status and will not be accepting new United Healthcare/Optum clients until September 1, 2017. I am available to see current or returning clients with United Healthcare insurance. Please read below about the restrictions that United Healthcare imposes on contracted mental health counselors, including me, before deciding whether to use your United Healthcare plan for mental health.
Cigna covers hour-long sessions, including couples therapy, as standard covered services. I do not need to contact Cigna or share your protected health information in order to authorize and obtain reimbursement for those services.
United Healthcare is more challenging. They only reimburse for 45-minute sessions after your initial assessment session. If you want or need an hour-long session, they will not reimburse for it and any claims I submit for this added time will be denied. If you are interested in doing EMDR therapy, I require a minimum of a 60-minute session, which United Healthcare will sometimes authorize only if you qualify for a clinical diagnosis of PTSD. I am required to do a 20 - 30 minute "clinical review" with a person at United Healthcare to explain why you meet criteria for PTSD and to ask that they authorize 60-minute sessions. This involves giving them details about your history and symptoms.
United Healthcare will not reimburse me for an hour-long sessions for couples work no matter the circumstance or diagnosis. People often opt not to use their United Healthcare benefits due to these reasons. I am considering removing myself from the United Healthcare list of providers later in 2017 due to the restrictions United Healthcare presents in using best practices, such as adequate session lengths, to treat my clients.
I am an out-of-network provider for Blue Cross and Blue Shield, Aetna, Humana, and most other insurance plans, which means I can file your insurance claims but the insurance company will only pay the claim according to your "out-of-network" benefits. If my name is not on your insurance provider list, chances are that none or very little of my session fee will be covered. Plans vary greatly, so please check your coverage carefully prior to contacting me by asking your insurance carrier representative the following questions:
- Do I have mental health insurance benefits on my policy?
- Is Jennifer Hume on my provider list?
- If Jennifer Hume is NOT on my provider list, do I have "out-of-network" mental health insurance benefits that may cover part of the fee?
- What is my deductible and has it been met?
- What is the coverage amount per therapy session?
- Is an authorization required prior to my first session?
- How many sessions per year does my health insurance cover?
Cash, check and all major credit cards are accepted for payment. I do charge a fee when using credit, to offset the cost of credit card processing fees. To avoid this extra expense, please pay by cash or check. You can also use the "Send Money" feature with Paypal, free of additional fees to Jenniferhume@aol.com
I am happy to provide appointment reminders. If you do not show up for your scheduled therapy appointment, and you have not notified me at least 24 hours in advance, you will be required to pay $90 for the contracted time I set aside for you. I do not double-book sessions. Therefore, when you don't give me notice so I can fill your spot with someone on my waiting list, I lose income. Which is uncool. Hence, the $90 fee to cover my overhead and other expenses. I do require a copy of your credit card payment information kept on file so that I can charge for missed sessions.
